Nestled in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Cashiers, NC, is a gem for nature lovers and a perfect destination for weekend getaways and couples trips. If you’re looking for a short, rewarding hike with a stunning payoff, Silver Run Falls is an absolute must-do. This charming waterfall is tucked away in the Nantahala National Forest and offers not only beautiful scenery but also a swimming hole at the base!
Why Silver Run Falls?
Whenever I have company, I always take them to Silver Run Falls. In fact, I often make it a part of my Waterfall Loop Tour. The trail to Silver Run Falls is short, flat, and well-maintained, making it ideal for just about anyone. It is only about a 15 minute drive from the cabins, and, within just a few minutes of walking, you are already at the waterfall.
The trail crosses a good sized creek via a small bridge. This is actually the Whitewater River, close to the headwaters. This river joins with Silver Run Creek to the right, and eventually leads you to Whitewater Falls, the highest waterfall east of the Mississippi.
The trail ends at the pool below the waterfall. Huge slabs of rock line the edge of the pool, convenient spots to sit and enjoy the waterfall. The swimming hole is large and looks deep in spots. I haven’t personally tried swimming here (I am a wimp about cold water). But the last time I stopped by, several kids were just about to jump in. Brrrr!
